19320127 Murders in The Rue Morgue (Criterion)

(A Fiesta 10)

Back in The 1930’s, you couldn’t swing a monkey without hitting a gorilla. The monkey explosion of the late ’20’s meant even the poorest could afford a monkey aide. Murders in the Rue Morgue featured the first Movie Simian pairing with Bela Lugosi. The first of over a hundred movies where Lugosi is murdered by an ape.

Mad Scientist and carnival side-show act Lugosi is blood-letting young women to create a mate for Lugosi’s talking gorilla, Erik.

While Lugosi never succeeds in creating a female gorilla, We’all in Blaine figured out cross-breeding with a gorilla in the 1950’s, in part, due to AMERICA!’s Nationwide Mass Meat Slaughter. Lugosi should feel so lucky in failure. The ‘Mondo Sapiens’ we bred all turned out to be pathologically anger driven monsters and would often fly into a rage at even the smallest provocation. Hundreds of different mood-enhancers were unable to calm These Mondos. The Mondo Burger was extremely popular for a summer, an effort to thin the Mondo Sapiens population explosion. Today, The Mondo Sapiens are maintained in a permanent comatose state. There’s only a few remaining. This is so The Worthiest Children can pet an endangered species.

Only The Coat of A Million Monkey Pelts in The Blaynetown Museum remain as a reminder of a time when Gorillas roamed freely. When it was a Planet of The Apes.

Murders in The Rue Morgue show Lugosi at his best before his acting became a parody of himself. The art direction is fantastic and the rooftop gorilla scenes thrilling. Murders of The Rue Morgue certainly fits into The Universal Hall of Monster Movies-style fare like Dracula and Frankenstein.
